Summary: Accusations have arose, with birth certificates and police reports to back it up, that Shaun King, the activist behind the Black Lives Matter movement, is actually white.
The race of the leader of the Black Lives Matter movement has been called into question. While the activist Shaun King claims that he is black, all official documents suggest otherwise. Oprah Winfrey awarded King with a Moorehouse College scholarship, a scholarship only given to black men.
King gained national attention when he described an incident in high school that he described as a hate crime against him. An investigative blogger, that is also white, started the accusation against King’s race. His birth certificate lists his parents as both white, as is his brother. King has repeatedly claimed that his father is black.
The police report from the attack in high school also lists King’s race as white. While he has not directly responded to the accusations, King did comment to one follower on social media that “police reports are like to the media man. Now they are basically claiming I lied about every aspect of my life for the past 20 years.” The police report detailed only minor injuries that King sustained while his account as well as other witnesses suggests the police report in this case is not completely accurate.
In King’s account of the attack, he explains that he was beaten to just inches of his life, requiring “three brutal spinal surgeries” during the 20 months of school that he missed. He claims that he needed counseling for PTSD and has since had more surgeries on his spine and years of physical therapy. Fellow students at Moorehouse backed up his story, stating that he had back problems while at the school.
