Summary: A mentally unstable lawyer from Long Island used a kitchen knife to kill her 79-year-old mother after a fight turned vicious.
Irma Grossman, a retired schoolteacher and grandmother didn’t deserve to die a bloody painful death at the hands of her daughter. Grossman’s daughter, a 56-year-old lawyer from Long Island, used a kitchen knife to stab her 79-year-old mother in the neck.
Suzan Grossman-Kerner is a married mother of three that has had a long history of mental problems. During a commonly occurring argument with her mother, she snapped and stabbed the “loving grandmother” but then had the mental ability to call 911 and try to blame the murder on someone else.
When police arrived, Grossman was still alive but bleeding heavily from her head and neck. The grandmother died shortly after being taken to the hospital.
Neighbors expected something bad would happen at the house someday. They described the family as “wild” and “unstable”, where “blood-curdling screams” would commonly come from the house with “screaming, yelling, cursing.”
Grossman-Kerner was escorted out of the police headquarters for Nassau County with a dazed look wearing a hospital gown. While she had indicated to police that her mother had been attacked in her home, she later implicated herself in the murder. She pleaded not guilty and was held without bail.
Her lawyers reported that she is on suicide watch and will likely aim for an insanity plea. This isn’t surprising since she clearly is not completely straight in the head.
