The former TV star Judge Joe Brown will be seeing the other view of the law for five days. Brown was found in contempt of court from an incident a year ago.
Brown was helping a woman with a child support case when he was warned by the judge overseeing the case to quiet down. He ignored the judge and continued to be vocal with the court employees. Brown had insisted that the woman’s charges being dropped, the judge argued that Brown was “not an attorney so-and-so.” He believes he should only have been fined but instead he spent a few hours in jail. A hearing was then set for a month later to determine the sentence of five-days that he now currently serving.
Brown had surrendered himself to Memphis police where he was then transferred to the facility for his five-day sentence. The judge that Brown had interrupted told media “This is not Hollywood. This is the real thing and as an officer of the court he should have known better.”
Brown’s TV show ran from 1998 to 2013 when it was cancelled. He started off as the first African-American prosecutor in Memphis. He then opened his own law office before becoming a judge for the State Criminal Court of Shelby County, Tennessee. Brown achieved his first fame as the presiding judge over James Earl Ray’s last appeal for the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
