Summary: The Supreme Court of Italy has cleared Seattle-native Amanda Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito from the murder of Meredith Kercher after eight years of legal battles.
The murder of Meredith Kercher in 2007 began a controversial and never-ending saga of determining who was guilty of her brutal murder. Kercher’s roommate Amanda Knox and boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, were accused of murdering the British 21-year-old but the evidence was always rocky.
Knox and Sollecito were ordered two years after the murder to spend four years in prison. Kercher was found in their Perugia apartment in a pool of blood. She had around 40 stab wounds over her mostly naked body.
The argument by prosecutors was that Knox and Sollecito killed Kercher as part of a sex game. The two had no alibi except each other, claiming that they spent the evening watching a movie, smoking pot, and having sex with each other.
The convictions were overturned in 2011 allowing for Knox to flee home to Seattle where she vowed to stay no matter what. A second trial was held in Italy but Knox did not return for it. The conviction was overturned but the latest ruling by the Court of Cassation declared that the lack of physical evidence should never have permitted the case to happen. Further prosecution is not allowed to happen again on the case.
A third person that was accused as part of the murder plot was Rudy Guede. He is now serving 16 years. He had left biological traces at the scene whereas Knox and Sollecito had left known that linked them to the crime.
Knox vows to spend her time helping others that are falsely accused.
