Once-Retired Florida Deputy Shot and Killed

Summary: A Florida deputy is shot outside a law firm.

When Florida sheriff’s deputy Bill Myers came out of retirement to save a little extra money to take his granddaughter to Disney World, he had no way of knowing this decision would leave him dead by Tuesday morning.

Deputy Myers met Joel Dixon Smith at a law firm in the area that morning. The deputy served Smith with a domestic violence injunction and ordered him to turn over his firearms. The two men were walking to Smith’s car, allegedly to retrieve the firearms, when Smith pulled out a concealed weapon and shot the officer several times in the back of his head and back.

People at a nearby business heard the gunshots, called 911, and went to investigate. They assumed another business had been robbed, but soon saw found the deputy bleeding on the ground. As the witnesses tended to the officer, Smith casually walked away. Myers was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead soon after.

He was “a sick little coward,” the Okaloosa County Sheriff, Larry Ashley, said about Smith.

After the shooting Smith took off for the Comfort Inn & Suites, where he already had reservations. He barricaded himself inside his room. The police soon arrived and the parties exchanged gunfire; Smith was killed in the confrontation.

Smith had been a rural Postal Service carrier since 2013. He was arrested for domestic battery in 2008.
