Summary: Hillary Clinton revealed that she gutted fish in Alaska before going to law school. What did other presidential candidates do before “finding themselves”?

When Hillary Clinton was in her twenties, she was just as confused about life and her career as the rest of us.

What
Where

The presidential candidate recently sat down with “Girls” creator Lena Dunham for Lena’s new newsletter, Lenny Letter. Lena asked Hillary what her advice to recent college graduates was. Hillary said not to worry; indecision is normal.

“I don’t trust anybody who didn’t say they had some questions in their twenties. That’s such a period of exploration and often torment. After college, I had made the decision to go to law school, but it was a hard decision. I wasn’t sure that was exactly what I wanted to do,” Hillary said.

So before she committed to law school, she went to Alaska and gutted fish alongside some “gentlemen from Japan.” Her working conditions were not ideal. The salmon she slimed were not very fresh-looking, which concerned her. Luckily, the plant was shut down before anyone had the opportunity to get sick.

Clinton’s Democratic opponent Bernie Sanders had a similar journey to finding himself after graduating from college. According to Biography.com, he “lived on a kibbutz in Israel before settling in Vermont.”

CNN has compiled a list of the leading Republican candidates’ early career jobs. Although it seems the other candidates had a more straightforward post-college path than Clinton or Sanders, they also took interesting paths between graduating college and launching hugely successful careers.

Real estate tycoon and Republican front runner Donald Trump joined his father’s real estate company after he graduated from Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania.

Businessman and political heir Jeb Bush, who later became the 43rd Governor of Florida, joined Texas Commerce Bank after he graduated from the University of Texas.

Mike Huckabee dropped out of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary but went on to become a pastor at a Baptist church.

Carly Fiorina temped while getting her undergrad degree at Stanford University. She worked as a secretary at HP, which led to her impressive business career that included being CEO of HP from 1999 to 2005.
