Back to the Future Predictions for Lawyers

Summary: Back the Future Day just passed, but luckily for lawyers, things are not quite how they were predicted by the popular movie.

Let’s take a good hard look at the legal predictions the movie Back to the Future made for yesterday, October 21, 2015.

Marty McFly: [Reading the newspaper from 2015] “Within two hours of his arrest, Martin McFly Jr. was tried, convicted and sentenced to fifteen years in the state penitentiary.”? Within two hours?

Doc: The justice system works swiftly in the future now that they’ve abolished all lawyers.

Lawyers had been abolished, making the legal system very speedy. Martin McFly Jr. was arrested, tried in a data-court, and sentenced within just a few hours. Our current legal system can take years before someone is sentenced. That is not very likely to change anytime soon to a system where lawyers are no longer needed and an entire case can be tried within hours.

However, there is less need for lawyers. Law school graduates experience difficulty in finding jobs, partially because of technological advances that have made it so typical clients can sometimes do the work themselves. Sites like LegalZoom allow anyone to obtain legal documents quickly and for a fraction of the cost that it would take to visit a real lawyer.

Try and imagine what a mess the courts would be if there were no lawyers to defend the innocent and keep the legal process in check.
