The water hasn’t quit rising for Volkswagen AG. The scrutiny from U.S. regulators has expanded to other models from Audi and diesels from Porsche in the emissions cheating scandal.
Assistant administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance, Cynthia Giles, said of the car company, “VW has once again failed in its obligation to comply with the law that protects clean air for all Americans.” The EPA announced that some VW, Audi, and Porsche models from 2014-2016 with 3.0 liter engines have equipment to alter their emissions systems.
Volkswagen is fighting back, claiming the allegations are false. They contend that the EPA is upset over what they claim was an inadequate description of the V6 TDI diesel engines software functions. “VW stresses that no software has been installed in the 3-liter V6 diesel engines to change emission results in an admissible way. Volkswagen will fully cooperate with the EPA to clarify the matter unreservedly,” the company stated.
The investigation began in September when VW admitted to fixing the emissions systems of diesel vehicles in order for them to pass pollution tests. The EPA and California Air Resources Board began the investigation since it affects nearly 500,000 cars in the U.S. and 11 million across the globe. This expansion adds around 10,000 more cars.
This cheating scandal has rocked the world, causing the resignation of the chief executive and crushing their profits. VW has already set aside $7.4 billion, but could face fines up to $18 billion.
