Summary: One Orlando area law firm has gone the extra mile to help those in need this Thanksgiving holiday with free turkeys.
Thanksgiving is two days away but thousands of families are still struggling to figure out how to put food on the table, let alone something a little more special for the holiday. Pendas Law Firm wanted to help alleviate that struggle by giving turkeys to those in need.
The act started seven years ago when a client of the Orlando firm admitted he couldn’t afford to buy a turkey for his family that year. Lou Pendas, president of the firm, went out and bought him one. This got Pendas thinking that there were likely more families that needed a little extra help during the recession.
Pendas soon determined there was a large need, “We realized very quickly how much this was not just an Orlando problem, but it was everywhere. So, we recognized that and went ahead and tried to help as many as we could.”
They started out giving 1,000 turkeys but each year the number has grown. Now they give out turkeys to those in Jacksonville, Tampa, and Fort Myers. Pendas states, “It’s just our humble way of trying to do something for the community. We’re just trying to give back to those who perhaps are not in the same financial situation as we are.”
Families in need wait for hours in hopes they will get a free turkey, bringing chairs and blankets to pass the time in line. The first person arrived at midnight this year to wait in line. They started passing out turkeys today at 8:30am.
