Rita Ora is suing the record label of her mentor, Jay Z. The British singer filed a lawsuit against the rapper’s Roc Nation label, claiming the company stopped taking care of her and its other clients once it got into the sports management game.
“As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives,” the lawsuit reads. “Rita’s remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company.”
Ora, a dead ringer for Roc Nation’s other artist Rihanna, said she felt “orphaned.”
The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday. Essentially, Ora sued because she wants out of her contract. She stated in the lawsuit that she wants to leave to promote and create her own music and TV projects.
The 25-year-old singer signed with Roc Nation in 2008. She released songs such as “R.I.P.,” “I Won’t Let You Down,” and “Black Widow” with Iggy Azalea. Although her songs were hits, she never really connected with American audiences. Her lack of success was so notable that music magazines like SPIN and VICE even wrote think pieces about why Americans hate her.
Spin said about her artistry, “Ora is a mirror. Musically, she reflects anything she faces. Managers and producers can only do so much — in order to succeed, the artist must bring their own ineffable charisma.”
The magazine was optimistic though that Ora, who had an Oscar nominated song and a bit role in Fifty Shades of Grey, may turn her career around. Maybe all she needs is to be free of Jay Z.
Ora filed the lawsuit under California’s “seven-year rule.” The rule basically states that a person can break their contract once they completed at least seven years of it. The majority of lawsuits filed using the “seven-year rule” had led to settlements or renegotiated deals.
