Summary: The Daily Caller reports that attorneys in Washington, D.C. on average make more than other attorneys in the United States.
If you’re an attorney working in Washington, D.C., you’re on average paid more than lawyers working in other major cities. You’re also compensated way more than the national average.
This is what The Daily Caller reports. The news organization states that D.C. lawyers on average made more than $160,000 in 2014. That is almost $15,000 more than what attorneys average in pay in New York City, and it is almost double the national average pay of attorneys. (See their chart below.)
Although The Daily Caller’s data measures the salaries of all attorneys by cities, it did not break down lawyer pay based on the type of attorney, the industry in which one practices, or the size of one’s firm. Earlier this month, we published data about in-house attorneys and on average, New York had the highest paid general counsel. Those lawyers averaged a salary of $195, 013 per year.
Some first year associates at big law firms can make the Washington D.C. average if they work at companies such as Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, but other first year associates earn a more modest start. For the complete list of Big Law salaries, check out our 2015 LawCrossing Survey.
