Summary: Ethan Couch and his mother are fighting extradition to the United States after a pizza delivery call got them discovered in a cheap apartment in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Ethan Couch and his mother, Tonya, were finally found near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico after disappearing a few weeks ago. It was expected that they would be deported today from Guadalajara, Mexico on a flight for Houston but his attorney filed a legal writ to keep them in Mexico.
The writ to prevent extradition is a common attempt by those being returned to the United States by the U.S. Marshals Service. Now Couch and his mother may not be required to return until tomorrow, next week, or even longer.
Tarrant County Sherrif Dee Anderson is confident the fugitive pair will be returned to the U.S. at some point, “It’s just another hurdle we have to get over. These are people who are making every effort to avoid accountability and responsibility. It’s a pattern long established. I’m not the least bit surprised.”
The protection order gives Couch three-days in delay before being deported while a judge rules on the filing. If a judge rules in favor of Couch, he could get a trial in Mexico that will last weeks or even months.
Whenever they do arrive back on American soil, they will have to answer to Tarrant County officials. It appears as if they planned to be gone for a long time, even having a little going away party.
Prosecutors will be charging Couch for violating his parole but are also trying to move his case to an adult court. His mother will be charged with Hindering An Apprehension, a third-degree felony with up to 10 years in prison.
