Entitlement is a dangerous thing. Achieving success in any career requires some luck but relying on everything being handed to you will never result in anything. Having confidence, being a hard worker, a great salesman or having charisma doesn’t guarantee you’ll be successful.
The rules always apply. There may be some flexibility but in the end, everyone is held to the same level of expectations in the quality and amount of work performed. The law school you attended won’t mean that you’ll be held to different standards. Graduating from Harvard or Yale doesn’t guarantee success but many attorneys believe that it does. Hard work is required by everyone.
There are many factors that tell a major law firm if you’re playing by the rules or not. Here are just a few:
– Quit a job without another lined up
– Left a law firm to try something else unrelated to practicing law for a few years
– Move law firms every couple years
– Went solo and want to return to a large law firm
Law firms, especially the large prestigious ones, run by a certain set of rules that expect all attorneys within to follow. The price to pay to be a part of this environment may be steep but so is the reward if done right. You may get hired once despite a lack of credentials, but the chance of it happening again should you leave that firm are very slim.
