Yale Law School Latin American Exchange Begins

Summary: Every February students from the top law schools in Latin America travel to Yale Law School for an exchange program that sends the Yale students to Latin America during the summer.

The annual three-week residence program for the Yale Law School Latin American Linkage program started this week. Ten students are selected from the seven leading law schools in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile to travel as representatives to Yale. This year’s selection includes one student currently serving on the Brazilian Supreme Court.

The three-week program started out with a tour of campus and libraries. Instructions were given on how to use digital resources as well as examining rare historical documents and books from Yale’s collection. The Latin American students will also meet with faculty, student leaders, and alumni practitioners. The students will get the opportunity to observe classes and give presentations on their own research and legal problems in their home countries. The students are hosted with Yale students that will in turn stay with the Latin American students when they switch during the summer.

The program was started years ago to increase the understanding of each countries different approach to legal education as well as legal issues the countries face. The hope is for friendships to be formed among a promising group of future leaders and scholars.

The other students from the Latin American schools include doctoral students, six completing master’s programs, and two finishing a five-year undergraduate law degree. The topics of the research presentations include “Black Awareness Day in Brazil,” the “public interest” movement of Argentina, and problems from the quasi-constitutional status in international treaties of domestic law and antitrust in Chile. There are three students from Argentina, two from Chile, and five from Brazil.
