Law firm clients have been raising awareness of the need for better cyber security after numerous cyberattacks have damaged private companies and U.S. government agencies in the past few years. Chair of Latham’s New York litigation and trial department Miles Ruthberg said, “In the cyber area in particular, we have more demand than we have lawyers to serve it at the moment. That’s not surprising given everything we know that’s happening.”

Turner’s move to the firm won’t go into action until late March where he will then focus his practice on cybersecurity and data-protection issues. This work is right up his ally as he previously worked the last five years at the U.S. Attorney Office in the criminal division as the cybercrime coordinator. It was while serving in this position that he prosecuted Ross Ulbricht, the alleged creator of the Silk Road, an underground website that allowed over $200 million in anonymous drug sales using the currency bitcoin. Ulbricht is appealing his life in prison sentence.
