Have you ever actually measured your footlong sandwich from Subway? Well it turns out there is a good chance it wasn’t a full 12 inches long.
A group of 10 people filed a class action lawsuit against the sandwich chain over the size of their sandwiches in 2013. The lawsuit finally reached a settlement with each member receiving $500 each when a judge approved the final settlement agreement.

The lawsuit began after an Australian teenager posted a photo of his 11 inch sandwich on Facebook. The New York Post then conducted their own little experiment and found that four out of seven footlong sandwiches were only 11 to 11.5 inches long.

Subway’s explanation for the discrepancy in bread lengths was that the bread is delivered frozen to each store and must be thawed out and then stretched out, which some stores may not do properly. Subway must spend the next four years making sure their sandwiches are 12 inches long by placing measuring devices in each store to make sure this is never a problem again.

Subway will also have to pay $520,000 in legal fees which will be split between 10 law firms. Potential members of the class were not awarded any money. As co-lead attorney of the class, Thomas Zimmerman pointed out, “It was difficult to prove monetary damages, because everybody ate the evidence.”
