On Wednesday, New York Supreme Court Judge Shirley Kornreich dismissed nearly all of Kesha’s counterclaims against Dr. Luke, PEOPLE reports. This was devastating news to the 29-year-old singer who has been in a long legal battle with the music producer, 42, whom she claimed drugged, raped, and abused her for almost a decade.

What
Where

In 2014, Kesha came forward with sexual abuse allegations against Dr. Luke, and she asked to be released from her contract with him and his label, Kemosabe, a Sony imprint. Dr. Luke responded with a countersuit for defamation and breach of contract, and the mud slinging has raged on between the two since. In February, for instance, she wrote, “This is about being free from my abuser.”

Dr. Luke discovered Kesha when she was a teenager, and he persuaded her to leave her family and move to Los Angeles. He signed her to Kemosabe and blossomed her career. Together, they had created such hit songs as “Tik Tok” and “Your Love Is My Drug,” which cultivated her party girl persona and made her a bonafide pop star.

But Kesha’s pop veneer was darkened when she revealed what actually went on behind closed doors with Dr. Luke, and her claims have sparked huge outrage against the notoriously publicity-shy producer, who has vehemently denied ever abusing the singer.

Overall, it seems as if Wednesday’s ruling had little to do with Dr. Luke’s innocence or guilt, and more to do with technicalities. Judge Kornreich dismissed the claims because of jurisdiction and lack of evidence. Additionally, CNN reported that the judge said the statute of limitations on the claims had expired.
