Prospective law school students and potential transfers consider a handful of factors when making a decision, and location is one of those factors. After all, a recent study found proximity was the biggest factor in which lawyers made partner at Big Law firms.
On Friday, Kaplan released a list of the 6 best cities to live in during law school. Using law school data from their program, StartClass, the following is Kaplan’s top city picks for law school students.
Atlanta, Georgia
Kaplan writes that the average lawyer salary in Atlanta is $140,000 and that it’s the best paying city in the state for lawyers. With four law schools in the city, it’s a metropolis for learning.

Austin, Texas
Texas’ capital has a lower cost of living compared to other cities, and Kaplan reports there’s been a recent surge of employment in the area in the last few years.

Boston, Massachussetts
According to Kaplan, Boston lawyers are paid well, which makes the city a huge draw for students who want to be near money. They stated that 20.7% of the population are young adults and 2.4% of them have a professional career. The city is usually cold but beautiful.

Columbia, Missouri
“Columbia is the state’s fourth most populous metropolitan area and is the midway point between the larger metropolitan areas of Kansas City and St. Louis,” Kaplan said. In addition to its central location, it offers outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking for students to enjoy on their off hours.

Phoenix, Arizona
This hot-weathered city has hundreds of golf courses, the world’s largest non-profit zoo, and annual diversity events, according to Kaplan. Its the kind of place where students can roll about town in flip flops and have a good time. Plus, Arizona State University offers one of the most competitive in-state tuition rates for a U.S. News and World Report top ranked school.

Washington, D.C.
According to Kaplan, “The proximity to the Supreme Court and other federal agencies is a major attraction for many law students.” Kaplan also said that the nation’s capital boasts a young adult population of 21%, which increases the odds of students having play with all that work.
