Summary: Channeling his inner child, lawyer John Nonnenmacher allegedly faked being sick to get out of court.

Lawyer John Nonnenmacher is getting on the last nerve of Brooklyn federal Judge Allyn Ross, but will he ever clean up his act?

According to the New York Daily News, Nonnenmacher and Ross’s contentious relationship started after the attorney disappeared after jury selection. He was handling a police brutality case and he allegedly wanted more time so he went AWOL. The lawyer then sent another lawyer to court with the sob story that Nonnenmacher’s mother had died.

However, truth was—Nonnenmacher’s mother was alive, and Judge Ross seethed when she learned she had been lied to.

Judge Ross ordered Nonnenmacher to explain himself, but like a girl after a bad Tinder date, he ghosted the judge for weeks, claiming a mysterious illness that left him hospitalized. Already fed up, the judge wasn’t buying the sickness excuse. In fact, she actually called the hospital to fact-check and found that Nonnemacher was never a patient there. Trying to backpedal, the lawyer reportedly claimed he was transferred to four hospitals and didn’t have access to a phone. Judge Ross smelled BS and told him off.

Days earlier, New York Daily News spoke to Nonnemacher’s wife, Laura, who insisted he was actually sick. She wouldn’t give any details, though.

Nonnemacher then said he never claimed his mother was dead, he meant to say she was ill and that the second lawyer had misspoke.

Judge Ross said she would decide on Nonnemacher’s conduct in the future, but as of now, the disappearing attorney’s client has dropped her police brutality lawsuit against the city. The city seeks damages against Nonnemacher, his co-counsel, and the plaintiff.
