The settlement will prevent the city from facing a federal civil rights trial that would have put the case back into the spotlight and create more trouble for the police. The city could also have been forced to pay a larger amount with a trial.

The settlement is the largest in the city’s history for a police-related civil lawsuit. The terms of the settlement does not mean the city is admitting any wrongdoing. The settlement is in line with settlements in other cities such as New York for Eric Garner’s death and in Baltimore for Freddie Gray’s death. A probate court must still approve the settlement.
The Rice family had sought for criminal charges against the officer that shot Rice. The grand jury decision last year to not indict office Timothy Loehmann will not be affected.

Rice had been holding a realistic-looking pellet gun. The message relayed to the officer was of a male with a weapon, missing the key detail that he was a juvenile and the weapon was probably fake. Based on the information given to the officers involved, the grand jury decided they were justified in their actions.
