Summary: Should Donald Trump win the presidential election, he has provided a list of candidates that he would consider to fill the empty spot on the U.S. Supreme Court.
With a spot now open on the United States Supreme Court everyone is wondering who the next President may select as their Supreme Court nominee. Republican candidate Donald Trump has enlightened the country with a list of eleven people he would consider for the position.
In alphabetical order:
Steven Colloton, an Iowa native and member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit for 13 years. He was editor of the Yale Law Journal, clerk for Justice William H. Rehnquist, a U.S. attorney, and for an independent federal investigation agency.
Allison Eid, a member of the Colorado Supreme Court for the past ten years. She has also been the solicitor general for Colorado. She graduated from the University of Chicago Law School, clerking for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
Raymond Gruender, works alongside Colloton on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. He has been mentioned as a potential nominee by many Republicans because of his political background. His written opinion from a 1978 pregnancy law not giving female employees the right to contraceptive coverage has been used by Affordable Care Act opponents.
Thomas Hardiman, a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. He graduated from Georgetown Law School. The Supreme Court has reviewed two of his opinions. One opinion was for strengthening minimum sentences for criminals and the other review was supporting strip-searches of those arrested and sent to Pennsylvania’s jails.
Raymond Kethledge, a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. He has been the legal counsel for Republican U.S Senator of Michigan Spencer Abraham.
Joan Larsen, a member of the Supreme Court in Michigan. She graduated from Northwestern Law School and clerked for former Justice Antonin Scalia.
Thomas Lee, associate chief justice of Utah’s Supreme Court is brother to Utah Senator Mike Lee. He was a University of Chicago Law School graduate before clerking for Thomas. He then went into private practice and taught at Brigham Young University.
William Pryor, is the former attorney general of Alabama and currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. He is a pro-life advocate.
David Stras, associate justice for the Minnesota Supreme Court and former professor at the University of Minnesota Law School. He graduated from the University of Kansas Law School and clerked for Thomas.
Diane Sykes, currently a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and former justice of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin.
Don Willet, member of the Texas Supreme Court and known at the “tweeting judge.” He is one of the most conservative justices.
