Summary: An arrest has finally been made in the murder of Florida State law professor Dan Markel who was shot execution-style over a year ago in what is expected to be a murder for hire.

Florida State University law professor Dan Markel was shot execution-style in 2014. The death of the well-liked professor and legal blogger shocked the community. He was shot on the morning of July 18, 2014 while he was inside his car in his garage.

Sigredo Garcia of Miami Beach was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He has a lengthy criminal history with at least 22 arrests in Florida. His first arrest for vehicle theft was just days after he turned 15. He was arrested several times more as a teenager for assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana, trafficking in amphetamines, car burglary, and making or attempting to make an explosive device. His arrests as an adult include aggravated assault with a weapon, possession of cocaine and marijuana, strong arm robbery, and criminal mischief. When Garcia was arrested, two-tenths of a gram of cocaine was found in his wallet.

Any details of the case, now being called a murder for hire, have been sealed as Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo explained that case is “still an active criminal investigation†with more arrests expected to be made.

Markel was well respected in the field of criminal law. He wrote the blog PrawfsBlawgs, which discussed criminal justice topics. In a statement to PEOPLE, Florida State Dean Donald Weidner said Markel was “very much a man of new ideas – fresh, vivacious, stimulating.†Associate dean Michelle Dempsey of Villanova School of Law called him in an interview with PEOPLE “relentlessly positive†and “made you feel good about your work.â€
