Attorneys go through law school without being taught one thing that can completely derail their career. The lack of commitment to the job requirements of an attorney make it so many attorneys never make it past the first five years of their career. As Harrison Barnes explains, “An attorney job description is this: stay busy, work hard, and be committed.”
Attorneys, especially new attorneys, have to be on top of their game all the time. Barnes says, “One error in one assignment can ruin your career.” Take every assignment and treat it as if it is the most important thing in your life at the time.

Law firms want to keep attorneys around who are committed and are willing to work hard. Young attorneys have not had their commitment tested yet so law firms need them more than anyone. Once attorneys have had their commitment tested, law firms will be less likely to want to keep them around.
Attorneys can’t take a break from practicing law and expect to return easily. With very few exceptions, those that leave will never be hired by a large law firm again. They may be brilliant and interesting attorneys but they were not completely committed to the job.
