Summary: Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz is being sued for fraud.
Like their leader, Bernie Sanders’ supporters won’t back down, and now they are fighting back. Jezebel reported that 120 people have sued Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, 104 of those plaintiffs were Bernie campaign donors. The Bernie Bros and Bro-ettes allege that the DNC favored Hillary Clinton, amongst other charges. The lawsuit seeks class action status and a trial by jury.
Miami-based law firm Beck & Lee filed the lawsuit on June 28. The plaintiffs alleged fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and negligent misrepresentation for what they believe to be her part in primary rigging.
The lawsuit emphasized that Wasserman Schultz’s position requires her to be impartial, but that she was not. They cited as evidence a May 2015 document that suggested Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. That document as well as a research file on Donald Trump and Democratic Party donors was released by hacker Guccifer 2.0.
Plaintiffs said that a DNC Memo outlined a strategy to beat the Republican nominee, and that this memo only included mention of Clinton, even though she had opponents at the time. (Although Sanders cannot win the Democratic nomination based on his delegate numbers, he has not formally conceded.)
This lawsuit is not the first time that Sanders’ supporters have accused Wasserman Schultz of favoritism. They claimed there were too few Democratic debates and that her support for closed primaries gave Clinton an edge. Recently, Sanders demanded she be replaced by her primary opponent, Tim Canova, a law professor.
The DNC told the media that it believed the Guccifer 2.0 data release may have been a “part of a disinformation campaign by the Russians.”
