Summary: Lawyers representing the alleged victims of Jeffrey Epstein are fighting to overturn his plea deal and have him charged criminally.

Billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein may face new criminal charges for old crimes. In a unique move, lawyers representing his former alleged teen “sex slaves” are fighting to overturn his 2008 plea deal that some say was no more than a slap on the wrist.

Epstein was accused of having sex with minors and pimping out girls to his powerful rich friends, which include presidential candidate Donald Trump and former president Bill Clinton. He allegedly had sex parties on his private jet, in his lavish homes, and even on a private island; but his lifestyle caught up with him one of the girl’s parents reported him to the police. The girl was 14 years-old at the time, and she claimed Epstein had paid her for a massage.

The investigation into Epstein’s wild life took place in 2005, and soon, he was being accused by as many as 30-40 young women, who said he paid them for sex. According to Fox, girls claimed they received $200 to $300 for each meet, and when his Florida mansion was raided, authorizes found child pornography.

In exchange not to be prosecuted in federal court, Epstein pled guilty to prostitution with a minor and served a 13-month sentence in prison and at home on detention. He is now a registered sex offender.

But that punishment was not enough for two of his alleged victims. With help from attorney Brad Edwards and retired judge Paul Cassell, the girls filed a civil lawsuit in Florida, suing the Department of Justice and asking to overturn his deal. They claimed the prosecutors violated the Crime Victims’ Rights Act by offering a secret plea bargain in which they had evidence of. In the motion, the plaintiffs referred to Epstein’s deal as “one of the most extraordinarily lenient plea deals in American history.”

The women, now 28, have already received money from Epstein and are not eligible to receive damages in this new lawsuit. However, Edwards said this is about making “fundamental changes” to the justice system and going after Epstein with criminal charges.

According to Fox News, the alleged victims did not attend hearings regarding the secret plea deal and were unable to access evidence. This contradicts their rights under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act, which entitled them to public court proceedings involving the release, plea, sentencing, or any parole proceedings.

Fox News said that people believe Epstein’s friendship with powerful men such as Clinton may have played a role in his light sentence. The outlet reported that Clinton allegedly took 26 trips on Epstein’s Boeing 727, which was reported to have been outfitted with a bedroom for orgies with underage girls. One victim Virginia Roberts said that Epstein most likely recorded her sex sessions with Epstein’s friends in order to blackmail them.

Meg Garvin of the National Crime Victim Institute said that this case is “groundbreaking” for victims’ rights. The defense has not yet commented on this case.
