Summary: Shannen Doherty’s ex-manager has agreed to pay the actress for their neglect in securing her health insurance in 2014.
Actress Shannen Doherty and her ex-management company Tanner Mainstain Glynn & Johnston have settled her health insurance lawsuit for an undisclosed amount. According to Us Weekly, the sides came to this agreement on Friday, August 19.
Doherty filed the lawsuit in August 2015, which was when the public first learned of her illness.
Doherty, the star of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, has been outspoken recently with her battle with breast cancer, and in July, she shared photos of her shaved head on social media. She stated that Tanner Mainstain had neglected their duty of securing her health insurance, which resulted in her not being able to properly treat her cancer.
The TV star, 45, obtains health insurance through the actors union, Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Doherty said that SAG sent her an insurance invoice in November 2013 that would have taken care of her medical coverage for 2014. Her manager allegedly ignored the bill and failed to pay it without informing Doherty. In February of 2014, Tanner Mainstain dropped Doherty from their company.
Doherty said that without insurance in 2014 she was unable to see doctors until she was about to reenroll in SAG insurance in 2015. She stated that once she was insured in 2015 she learned that she had cancer that had spread, and in her lawsuit, she said that she would have caught the spreading earlier if she had seen someone in 2014.
“Plaintiff was also informed that, had she been insured and able to visit her doctor, the cancer could potentially have been stopped, thus obviating the need for the future treatment (including mastectomy and chemotherapy) that Plaintiff will likely have to suffer through now,” the lawsuit stated.
In August, Doherty revealed the status of her treatment.
“I had breast cancer that spread to the lymph nodes, and from one of my surgeries we discovered that some of the cancer cells might have actually gone out of the lymph nodes, so for that reason, we are doing chemo, and then after chemo, I’ll do radiation,” Doherty said.
