Summary: Taylor Swift served jury duty this week but was dismissed after one day.
Potential jury members in Nashville were surprised this week to find Taylor Swift joining them in their civic duty. The pop star was notably absent from Monday’s MTV Video Music Awards, and it turns out, it was because she was being just like us—serving jury duty.
The self proclaimed Law and Order: SVU fan was dismissed from serving on a trial, though. A judge said that there was a conflict of interest in letting Swift serve on an aggravated rape and kidnapping case because Swift is involved in her own sexual assault civil case.
“[Swift] asked to be left off out of concern for an upcoming trial in Denver where she was – she used the term – ‘groped’ by a fan at a meet-and-greet,” said Ken Whitehouse, a spokesperson for the Davidson Country district attorney’s office.
Last September, Swift was sued by a Denver radio DJ who claimed she falsely accused him of groping her and then lost his job. Swift swiftly counterclaimed his suit and said she had not made a false accusation.
Swift told the Nashville judge that she would serve on another case, but the judge went ahead and let her go.
The potential jury members she met were advised at first not to take pictures with Swift in the waiting room, but then they later began taking selfies and posting Swift’s whereabouts on social media. One person, Tracy Bates, said that Swift was happy to pose with fans and that she even autographed a book for her.
Bryan Merville also took a photo with Swift, and he praised the singer for her kindness.
“She’s about as famous as they come, but she couldn’t have been nicer,” said Merville to The Guardian. “She took the time to talk to every person who asked her for a picture.”
