Summary: Sports are taken very seriously by people of all ages, which is evident by the actions of one octogenarian in Florida over a shuffleboard game.
Who would have thought shuffleboarding could lead to violence? Of course Florida is the one place where it would. A dispute broke out between two elderly gentlemen at the Pinellas Park Senior Center. An 81-year-old Herbert Hayden used his shuffleboard cue to strike a fellow player.
The fight arose at one of the 16 courts in the senior center’s shuffleboard court pavilion. The police report alleges that Hayden “had a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation” with him punching the victim, James Sutton. Hayden punched Sutton in the face and “hit him with his shuffleboard cue causing damage to both cues.” Sutton received injuries to his face in the form of a pair of four-inch scratches on his right cheek. Sutton’s age is not included in the report.
Hayden was arrested for misdemeanor battery and booked into the county jail. He is held on $250 bond. A judge also issued an order requiring Hayden to having contact with Sutton. Hayden lives in a St. Petersburg mobile home park.
The criminal complaint does not offer any explanation as to why the fight broke out between Sutton and Hayden. It is known that the timing of the fight was near the end of the senior center’s Black & White Shuffleboard League. The League competes Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Shuffleboard is a popular sport for those at the senior center, according to the center’s website.
