Yesterday, it was reported that Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt. The two met on the set of their film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and they married in 2014.
“This decision was made for the health of the family,” Jolie’s attorney Robert Offer said in a statement to USA Today. “She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.”
After the divorce announcement, Pitt released his own statement.
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well being of our kids,” Pitt said. “I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Jolie and Pitt have six children together, and they have a net worth of over $400 million. CNBC wealth editor Robert Frank told E! News that the couple’s financial split will be unique because they have been together since 2004 but have only been married for two years.
“Anything that they bought during their two-year marriage, anything that they earned during their two-year marriage would be subject to negotiation,” Frank said. “But because both of them were really rich going into this marriage and that two-year period was not hugely active for either of them in terms of money earned or in terms of real estate purchased, it’s unlikely there’s going to be a big battle over a lot of money because their marriage itself and the amount of money gained during that marriage was fairly small.”
It is unclear whether or not Pitt and Jolie had a prenuptial agreement in place.
Jolie asked for physical custody of their children, and she cited the reason for their split as irreconcilable differences. However, media reports have alleged that Jolie was unhappy with Pitt’s marijuana use and parenting style. Additionally, Page Six claimed that Jolie was livid that Pitt had begun an affair with actress Marion Cotillard on the set of their new movie, a move very similar to what had happened with Jolie. When the pair had met during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time.
