Summary: The top unhappiest jobs have been released. Did attorney make the list?
In 2013, “Associate Attorney” was named the unhappiest job in America. Careerbliss, which released the ranking, surveyed people in all industries and asked them to rank their job based on ten happiness factors. These factors included things like pay and work environment. While morale was in the crapper that year, it looks like there has been a big improvement in attorney satisfaction. Since 2013, lawyer no longer made the top ten unhappiest jobs list, and this year was no exception.
“Sales Account Manager” seized 2016’s top slot followed by security officer, merchandiser, and cashier.
“Often sales managers are balancing a competitive work environment and managing a team,” said Careerbliss CEO Heidi Golledge to Forbes. “If the company they work for does not provide a positive and rewarding work environments many in this job can find themselves burned out.”
The rest of the list was rounded out with mostly other low paying customer service gigs such as driver or maintenance worker.
On the flip side, recruiters, full stack developers, and research assistants were the happiest jobs, respectively. Considering that the range of pay greatly varies from a recruiter ($57,000) to a developer ($72,000) to a research assistant ($31,000), there may be truth in the saying that money can’t buy you happiness.
Golledge said one reason that recruiters enjoy their work is that they are helping people. She said those in STEM positions have high happiness because technology employers work hard to create fun environments. This explanation that other factors matter more than money explain how attorney made the list in 2013, considering the average salary of those in big firms.
