The facts are Donald Trump has been elected as the 45th U.S. president. As a Republican, he joins a Republican controlled House of Representatives and Senate. With the control of Congress resting with one party, the Supreme Court is set up to take on some changes.
The three oldest members of the Supreme Court support Roe v. Wade, the landmark abortion rights ruling. Part of Trump’s campaign vocalized his prediction that his court picks would overturn the ruling. First up is replacing the late Antonin Scalia. Trump has not named any lawyers from Big Law. His list focused mostly on state and federal judges.

Trump’s shortlist of replacements for Scalia’s seat includes several solid conservatives like Utah senator Mike Lee and 10th Circuit Court of Appeals judge Timothy Tymkovich. Liberal justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer are expected to retire in the next two years. In two years, midterm elections come up and the Republican senate may lose its majority, making Trump’s ability to replace RBG and Breyer more difficult.

There are also likely to be big changes to international trade and business. Trump said, “America will no longer settle for anything less than the best.” U.K. law firms will be closely watching Trump’s policy changes. London managing partner at Shearman & Sterling, Nick Buckworth said, “As a firm that is very focused on international cross border transactions – we will keep a close eye on how the US continues to engage in its international trade relations. Donald Trump has expressed certain views on international trade so we’ll see how things will adjust.”
