Summary: Sofia Vergara and ex-fiancé Nick Loeb are battling it out in court over the fate of two embryos frozen when the couple was still together.
Celebrities Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb are in the midst of an ugly custody case except the custody is regarding embryos not children. When Vergara and Loeb were engaged, they had embryos frozen with the intent of having a surrogate but could not agree on what to do should they split.
Loeb is seeking custody of the two female embryos so that he can bring them to term. He intends to raise the children alone. He does not want any parental or financial assistance from Vergara.
Vergara, who is now married to Joe Manganiello, wants the embryos destroyed. She explained, “A child needs a mother and a loving relationship with parents who don’t hate each other…I wouldn’t want to bring kids to the world where it’s already set against them. It would be so selfish.”
In an attempt to divulge Loeb’s sexual past, she has demanded him to reveal the identities of two former girlfriends that had abortions performed roughly 20 years ago. In a New York Times op-ed he wrote, “When I was in my 20s, I had a girlfriend who had an abortion, and the decision was entirely out of my hands. Ever since, I have dreamed about a boy at the age he would be now.” Her legal team wants to take depositions from the two women.
A California judge upheld her request. Loeb appealed the decision, fearing their names would be made public. He stated to Page Six, “I would rather go to jail than reveal the names. I believe we have to protect a woman’s right to privacy.”
Do you think Vergara should have the ultimate decision over the embryos since she is the woman and the women get the decision over having an abortion? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
