Summary: Attorneys need a sense of confidence to be good at their job, which for some outside perspectives comes off as arrogance.
According to corporate counsel, there is one law firm in BigLaw that is more arrogant than the rest. This same law firm has been called out before for lacking modesty. BTI Consulting Group puts out a survey each year to learn about law firms, including which ones have inflated egos. For the past seven years there has been one law firm on the top of the list.
Other law firms that frequent the top ten list include:
- Baker & McKenzie LLP
- Cooley LLP
- Cravath Swaine & Moore LLP
- Dentons
- DLA Piper
- Gibson Dunn
- Jones Day
- King & Spalding LLP
- Kirkland & Ellis LLP
- Latham & Watkins LLP
- Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP
- Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP
- Sullivan & Cromwell LLP
- Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz
- Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP
- White & Case LLP
BTI collects its data by sampling the opinions of decision makers from organizations with $1 billion plus revenue. Even though Skadden is frequently the most arrogant, they have also made the Client Service A-Team list for the past 15 years. This list by BTI recognizes firms that provide top service to their clients.
Being arrogant doesn’t mean a law firm is all that bad. What general counsel may see as acting haughty is the same behavior that will advocate for their clients until there is nothing left. As BTI President Michael Rynowecer explains, “There are some clients who want a law firm that will do exactly what they say. These firms are all on the list because the really high-performing firms in client service tend to be opinionated, and when they have ideas on what their clients ought to do, they are often strong opinions.”
However, arrogance can be a bad trait. It may mean that a law firm is not flexible on fees, is bad on communication, ignores members of the legal team and more.
