Summary: In support of the South Korean people, the country’s parliament voted by a landslide to impeach their female president over a corruption scandal.
South Korea parliament in a motion passed 234 to 56 votes to impeach current president Park Geun-hye. With so many votes to impeach her, even some of her ruling Saenuri party voted against her. Prime minister Hwang Kyo-ahn will take over as interim president.
The people had taken to the streets after the scandal broke the news demanding her impeachment. The scandal involves her relationship with Choi Soon-sil, a close friend and confidante. The pair became friends in the 1907s when Park took over role as first lady after her mother was killed in an assassination attempt on her father. Choi’s father, who was the leader of a cult, became her mentor.
The allegations are that when Park became president three years ago that Choi took advantage of their friendship to obtain donations to two foundations she controlled, which she then siphoned off of for personal means. The belief is that the corporations who made the donations did so in return for political favors.
The Constitutional Court has 180 days to make a final ruling of whether her suspension will stick. If six of the nine judges approve the vote, she will be the first sitting South Korean president to be impeached during their democratic era. A new election for president will be held within 60 days. President Roh Moo-hyun was suspended in 2004 but the court overturned the impeachment vote.
After the vote, Park apologized for “creating this national chaos with my carelessness.”
