4 Spices with Awesome Body Benefits

Summary: Use these common spices in your cooking and food to improve your health and well-being.

We’ve all heard of superfoods, which can do amazing things for your health and weight loss, but did you know simple spices that we’ve been using for ages can also have great body and health benefits? Not only do adding these tasty flavors to your meals take healthier dishes from bland to amazing, but also have some amazing perks like improving your metabolism!

  1. Cinnamon: Studies have shown that using cinnamon in your food can help slow down your glucose intake. Glucose is what carbs are made up of, so by slowing down your body’s absorption of these usually quickly metabolized foods, you can stay fuller for much longer. Try adding cinnamon into your oatmeal, a smoothie, or if you prefer a savory breakfast, mix it in with your morning coffee!
  1. Parsley: While this herb can often be found as a decorative addition to your dish, actually using it to cook with can have surprising health benefits. Parsley contains anti-oxidants and anti-bacterial properties, both of which can help reduce your chance of catching a cold. To get the full benefit, be sure to chop up the whole plant (even the stems!) when adding this herb to your dishes.
  1. Cayenne: While this spice is well known in the fitness industry, many people may not realize its amazing benefits for boosting your metabolism. In addition, the active ingredient in cayenne is called capsaicin, which helps decrease your appetite and keeps you from snacking too much! Add cayenne to your next savory meal, such as sprinkled on top of eggs, mixed into a chili or soup, or even with a salad dressing!
  1. Peppermint: This herb is well known for its help with digestion, which can be really great when you’re suffering from bloating. In addition, it’s a relaxing herb, especially when made into tea, and can help reduce cravings when sipped on throughout the day!
Kathryn Wheeler: My name is Katie and I moved to Chicago in 2010 for law school and graduated in May 2013. I'm originally from Kansas City, MO and I did my undergrad at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. I started this blog in August of 2011 because I needed a creative outlet and I wanted to write about my life in a way that other women could relate to and realize that they aren’t alone in many aspects of their lives.
