Summary: After over 30 seasons, ABC’s Bachelor and Bachelorette series has finally named its first black lead.
The Bachelor and The Bachelorette have been plagued for years with accusations that the shows didn’t feature much racial diversity. In most seasons, there are a few people of color sprinkled in, but overall, the show’s casts skew white. However, ABC has announced that after fifteen years they will be doing their first Bachelorette with an African-American lead. Not only is their pick beautiful, but she’s a lawyer too!
Rachel Lindsay, 31, appeared on this current season of The Bachelor, and the Texas lawyer won so many viewers’ hearts that the network decided to let her be the lead of next season’s Bachelorette.
The announcement was made on Monday on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Lindsay’s season will premiere on May 22.
The Bachelorette is a spin-off of ABC’s hit dating show The Bachelor, which pits numerous women against each other as they vie for the heart of one man. The Bachelorette often finds its star in the cast of the previous season’s The Bachelor.
Robert Mills of ABC said that he was thrilled to announce Rachel Lindsay’s role in the series.
“We’re thrilled to have Rachel Lindsay as our next Bachelorette,” Mills said. “This coveted role is always reserved for a fan-favorite from the previous season, and Rachel is no exception and has been the fans’ choice since she exited the limo. She is an accomplished, confident and beautiful woman who knows what she wants in life. We all look forward to joining her on the joyous journey as she looks for that one special man.”
Lindsay is a civil defense litigation attorney at Cooper & Scully, P.C. in Dallas, Texas. She focuses on local government law, commercial litigation, tort law, premises liability and general insurance defense.
Lindsay said that she went on the reality show because she had been too focused on her career and wished that she had made time for love. Hopefully, the Texas beauty finds it!
