Canadian-based company Blackberry has filed a lawsuit against Finnish company Nokia for patent infringement in the United States. The allegations involve data transmission technologies in 4G and other mobile networks.
Blackberry claims that several of the transmitters and software programs Nokia uses are their intellectual property. A Nokia spokeswoman said, “We’re aware of the complaint, will study the claims made and take whatever steps are necessary to defend our rights.”
Blackberry does not want to block Nokia’s use of the 11 payments and instead would like to see payment for the use. They state that Nokia was fully aware of the patents as they sought to buy some of them before Blackberry ended up acquiring them. The lawsuit claims that Nokia has even cited relevant documents in other legal disputes.
The companies were at odds back in 2012 when Nokia tried to block the sale of Blackberry smartphones in the US, UK and Canada on the basis of another patent issue. Both companies no longer design their own mobile phones and instead license the right to put their brand on other phones of other makers.
