Summary: A racist couple has been sentenced to prison for terrorizing a black child’s birthday party in 2015.
In 2015, a group of Confederate flag supporters threatened black children at a birthday party. This week a Georgia judge sentenced two of them to prison.
In July 2015, Jose Torres, 26, and Kayla Norton, 25, were a part of a gang called Respect the Flag, a group of hoodlums who protested South Carolina’s removal of the flag on government buildings. During the summer, the thugs drove around and shouted racial slurs at black strangers, also threatening to kill or physically harm them.
During the group’s reign of domestic terror, they pulled up to a black child’s birthday party outside of Atlanta and threatened the adults and children present. At one point, Norton loaded a gun and Torres pointed it at a party guest. The incident was captured on video, and the police were promptly called.
This week, Torres and Norton were sentenced to 20 and 15 years in prison, respectively, for aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and violation of Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.
The racist parents of three cried in court denied that they were the evil culprits of what the judge deemed to be a hate crime.
“That is not me. That is not me. That is not him,” Norton said after her sentencing to the victims and their families. “I would never walk up to you and say those words to you. And I am so sorry that happened to you.”
Two other gang members had already pled guilty and were given lesser sentences.
