Summary: Attorney General Jess Sessions has removed himself from investigation into the Trump campaigns relationship with Russia.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from an investigation into the Trump campaign. In a press conference announcement Thursday, Sessions noted that he consulted with Justice Department lawyers about the role he played in the Trump campaign and what his role would be in the investigations. He said he did not feel like he should be the one investigating a campaign he had a role in.

Sessions defended his meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and the allegations that he provided “incorrect and false” information about what happened during the meeting. Sessions noted that the meeting with Kislyak turned touchy over the issue of Ukraine. Kislyak maintains that Russia did nothing wrong, although many people do not see things that way.

At the end of the press conference, Sessions said he was “taken aback” by the line of questioning during his confirmation hearing and should have “slowed down” to answer the questions more carefully. He should have explained that he met with one Russian official – Kislyak.

Dana Boente is the acting deputy attorney general. He was also the acting attorney general when Sally Yates resigned after making negative comments about Trump’s travel ban. However, Rod Rosenstein will likely handle the case once he is confirmed as the new deputy attorney general.
