Summary: St. Paul Police now think that lawyer Peter Berge may have struck a jogger because he has brain tumors, not because he was high.
On Wednesday, lawyer Peter Holmes Berge was driving in the late afternoon when his BMW SUV struck Scott Spoo. The impact killed the 35-year-old jogger and changed Berge’s life forever, and St. Paul Minnesota police arrived on the scene and promptly gave Berge a sobriety test in which he failed.
The police said the lawyer was acting “odd.” They gave him a breathalyzer test which he passed, but they arrested him for being under the influence of drugs because of his weird behavior. It is unconfirmed how he failed the sobriety test but passed the breath test. It is speculated that he was unable to walk in a straight line, although that has not yet been confirmed.
At the police station, Berge’s blood was tested for controlled substances, but those results have not been released and will not be available for up to three months. However, a new hospital test may be the clue as to why Berge killed Spoo.
According to The Daily Mail, Berge was playing the guitar three days after the accident when he felt weak. He went to the hospital to be checked out, and doctors discovered that he had four tumors in his brain. The local authorities said that they are now looking into whether or not his medical condition caused the crash.
The widower is the Web Director for Minnesota Continuing Legal Education and is a member of the bar. Friends of Berge said that he is responsible and not a drug user.
Spoo’s friends say he was an active outdoorsman and loved to jog, and his organs were donated as a last act of kindness.
