Summary: Five states have joined the fight to stop the new executive order banning travel from specific countries from being implemented on Monday.
As President Trump prepares to release his revised executive order restricting travel from specific countries, four states are already vowing to sue to stop the order from being implemented. They believe the first temporary restraining order can easily be applied to the new order.
The Democratic attorney generals from Washington, Oregon, New York and Massachusetts hope to stop the new travel ban from coming into effective on March 16. U.S. District Judge James Robart placed a hold on the first ban in early February. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his hold, causing the Trump administration to revise the order.
Washington is leading the fight with Attorney General Bob Ferguson, they plan to file a motion for Robart to apply the hold to the new order. He claims the travel ban is a ban on Muslims because the countries included on the ban are predominantly Muslim.
The new order blocks those of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from traveling to the United States. Iraq has been left off the list this time. Hawaii has already filed their own lawsuit stating that the ban hurts the state’s tourism industry, businesses, and educational institutions.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the administration remains hopeful that the new ban will pass court scrutiny.
