Imagine fighting over a tree for nearly two years. For John Lennon’s son, Sean, that was a reality until recently.
Sean Lennon was recently embroiled in a legal battle with Marisa Tomei’s parents over a 70-year-old rotting tree in Greenwich Village. On Tuesday, it was announced that the two parties had finally reconciled. The details of the settlement haven’t been released, but the offending tree has already been knocked down.
Lennon purchased a $9.5 million home in Manhattan six years ago, and he had a diseased tree on his property that had encroached into the Tomei family’s home, compromising the family’s foundation. Tomei’s parents, Gary and Addie, sued Lennon for $10 million, saying that the true ruined their property and made it so that their doors could not shut.
Gary and Addie Tomei had apparently begged Lennon to remove the tree since he had moved in, but he was resistant.
In September, a Manhattan judge ordered Lennon to cut down the dead tree, but the son of the Beatles’ star filed an appeal. He argued that his neighbors were responsible for altering their own entryway to accommodate his tree.
Tomei’s lawyer said at the time that Lennon’s request was absurd and arrogant.
“To suggest that [the Tomeis] forever transform their 170-year-old property so that [Lennon] may temporarily enjoy viewing its tree is absurd,” the Tomei’s lawyer said.
Eventually, Lennon dropped the appeal, and the tree came down.
