Summary: An attorney in Guam was arrested for stabbing a bar worker that had escorted him out of a bar for showing off his knife.
Attorney Richard William Hamlin is accused of stabbing another man outside a bar. Hamlin, an active member of the Guam Bar Association and serves on the Alcohol Beverage Control Board, was asked by police about the stabbing outside the Toy’s Tavern.
Hamlin, 32, invoked his right to remain silent instead of answer any questions regarding what happened in the parking lot. He has been charged with aggravated assault and related crimes for using a knife with a silver blade about three to four inches long to stab a man on the right side of his abdomen.
A witness told police that she saw Hamlin push the victim. The victim in turn asked Hamlin what his problem was, resulting in Hamlin stabbing the man. The two men struggled with the victim trying to get Hamlin under control by choking him so he could take the weapon away. Hamlin refused to drop the knife and eventually was able to run away.
The victim told police that he was escorting Hamlin out of the bar because he had been kicked out for showing off the weapon to people inside the bar. After being kicked out the first time, Hamlin reentered the bar and attacked another person so the victim had to restrain Hamlin. It was then that the victim was stabbed.
The victim was treated at the Naval Hospital Guam for a half-inch laceration to the right rib cage. He was in stable condition when talking with police.
Other witnesses stated that Hamlin had been drinking a lot and playing dice. He was asked to put his knife away on more than one occasion but wouldn’t. The bartender stopped serving Hamlin drinks because he was so heavily intoxicated.
Hamlin was found nearby trying to conceal himself on the ground in heavy vegetation. He refused to police his hands when ordered. He was forced into compliance by the officer. The other charges Hamlin faces are resisting arrest as a misdemeanor and public drunkenness as a violation.
