You would think that driving a street sweeper would result in some cleaning getting done but that was not the case in Oregon. Tyler Haguewood, 33, stole a sweeper Sunday morning, taking police on a 10-mile chase.

The police claim that Haguewood climbed into the Isuzu street sweeper at 3:45 AM when the driver had just exited the running vehicle “to use a handheld blower in order to clean an area where the street-sweeper could not reach.”

Once police in Hillsboro learned of the theft, it didn’t take long to locate the vehicle on the deserted early morning streets. “Officers activated their overhead emergency lights. The street-sweeper failed to yield,” according to police. The street sweeper reached speeds of 65 mph over the 10-mile chase before being taken down with spike strips deployed by Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Haguewood was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with several counts ranging from auto theft to attempting to elude police. Haguewood will also face a parole violation charge connected to a prior aggravated harassment conviction.

He is being held in the Washington County jail.
