Breaking Footage: Semi “Unknowingly” Drags Sedan Up Cajon Pass

Summary: A cell-phone video circulating around social media shows a tractor trailer dragging a small sedan up a California highway with no intention of stopping.

Well, this definitely isn’t something you see every day. A motorist filmed an incident unfolding along a California highway that in one way is completely fascinating but in another way is quite unnerving. A red Nissan sedan collided with a big-rig truck but the truck seemed to be completely unaware of what had happened.

In the video, you can see cars driving northbound on the I-15 Freeway near Highway 38 in the Cajon Pass. There is nothing unusual about that until you look closer and can see the back of a car stuck underneath the back end of a semi-truck that is still driving. The semi is driving up the hill as if nothing has happened even though there is clearly some resistance from the sedan as it is being dragged up the hill.

The cell-phone video shows the passerby coming upon the car where the driver is in the front seat waving and honking at the truck driver. The driver’s side front wheel has been ripped to shreds from being dragged along the pavement with smoking radiating from the wreckage of the front of the car.

Another motorist in what appears to be a silver crossover sized vehicle pulls in front of the truck, forcing it to slow down and stop. Meanwhile, the person filming the video pulls in front of the group to stop and get out of his car. When approached by the man filming the video, the truck driver claims to be completely unaware of what is going on at the back of his truck and does not even bother to turn his truck off or jump out of the cab to see what everyone was so alarmed about.

The video has bounced around Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube where viewers are demanding drug test results on the driver since the smashed car should be completely visible from the driver’s side mirrors. There did not appear to be any injuries from the incident.

A California Highway Patrol release reported that around 3:30 pm, truck driver Pete Edward Maestas, 62, of Bakersfield, was pulling two trailers filled with 50,000 pounds of carrots. He came upon a slower moving truck and went to move over a lane to pass the slower truck. What Maestas did not release was the Nissan Maxima being driven by Javier A. Diaz Jr, 34, of Oak Hills was already in the lane. The truck collided with the sedan. Maestas dragged the car for almost three-quarters of a mile.

When CHP arrived at the scene, they did not detect any signs of impairment in Maestas, checking his logbook, which was in compliance. He was allowed to drive away from the scene.

Do you think the truck driver knew what was going on or he was that oblivious? Tell us in the comments below.
