Summary: As Anthony Weiner faces prison time for sexting a teenager, his wife Huma Abedin files for divorce.Â
Sexting maniac and former politician Anthony Weiner has pled guilty to sending sexually explicit messages to a teenage girl. Weiner, 52, faces almost two years in federal prison for the crime.
On Friday, the skinny Weiner pled guilty to transferring obscene material to a minor, according to NBC News. He appeared in Federal District Court in lower Manhattan as part of a plea deal. Prosecutors asked that he receive almost two years in prison and that he register as a sex offender.
“Weiner’s conduct was not only reprehensible, but a federal crime, one for which he is now convicted and will be sentenced,” acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon Kim stated.
Weiner was once a rising figure in the Democratic party, but his infidelity and obsession with sexting led to his downfall.
For twelve years, Weiner represented Brooklyn and Queens in the House of Representatives, but he stepped down in 2011 after it was discovered that he had sent sexual messages to various women online. At the time, he was married to Huma Abedin, a Hillary Clinton aide.
Weiner seemed beat by the scandal but not forever limp. He attempted to revive his political career and his devoted wife stood by his side, but that came crashing down in 2016 when again he was caught sexting an unidentified 15-year-old from North Carolina.
NBC News reports that Weiner sent pornographic videos to the girl and asked her to reciprocate with nudes and masturbation videos. He allegedly used the nickname “T-Dog” with her.
The Daily Mail published what they said was screengrabs between the two, but Weiner claimed the texts were a “hoax.” He also sent The Associated Press a letter from the alleged victim’s teacher that stated the girl had recanted her claims.
“While I have provided the Daily Mail with information showing that I have likely been the subject of a hoax, I have no one to blame but me for putting myself in this position,” Weiner wrote in a statement to NBC News. “I am sorry.”
Weiner is married to Abedin, who was a Clinton aide for almost two decades. They married in 2010 but separated because of his adultery. Today, it was announced that Abedin has filed for divorce.
Weiner’s sexting led to a federal investigation where his laptop was seized, and in October, the FBI announced that they had found messages that pertained to Clinton’s own email scandal.
In May, now-ousted FBI Director James Comey said that Abedin had forwarded thousands of classified emails from Clinton to her husband, but a week later, he recanted, stating that he had grossly overexaggerated the number.
Weiner will be sentenced on September 8, and he was released on bail pending that date. He was required to relinquish his passport, and he was forbidden to leave the state of New York.
