Summary: Tiger Woods was arrested in Florida for allegedly driving under the influence.
Tiger Woods may be known as one of the greatest golfers of all time, but his personal life is arguably a big mess. TMZ reported that Woods was arrested early Monday morning and during his bust, the police said he was acting “arrogant.”
Jupiter, Florida police officers told TMZ that the athlete had been driving “erratically, all over the road” in his 2015 Mercedes before he was stopped. The officer who had pulled Woods over said that his breath reeked of alcohol and that he became “arrogant” when confronted about the smell. Police asked Woods to take a breathalyzer and he refused. In the state, that leads to an automatic arrest and license suspension.
This is not the first time Woods has been in trouble for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In 2009, he hit a tree while high on Ambien, but he was not charged with DUI at the time. This accident occurred during an infamous fight with his then-wife Elin Nordegren, who had confronted him about his adultery.
After that scandal broke, numerous women came forward to say that they had slept with the golf star while he was married, and Nordegren filed for divorce. She and Woods have two children together.
Woods has had serious relationships since his mistress scandal, but the women he had cheated on Nordegren with continue to make headlines with their association to the athlete. Only hours after his 3 am arrest, Cori Rist, a lingerie model and one of Woods’ former mistresses, has already spoken to the press. Rist and Woods met in 2006 at a night club and had a six-month affair.
“I saw the news, I only feel compassion for the guy. I think he’s a good person, and it’s kind of sad,” Rist told The New York Post.
Rist went on to say that Woods, 41, was a “good person” as well as a “good father.”
“I think he’s a good person, and clearly he’s a good father, and he’s going through a difficult time, and I think people should offer support instead of applauding his downfall,” Rist added.
Woods had been arrested in Jupiter, where he owns a home and a restaurant. In 2016, Forbes said that the golfer had a net worth of almost $740 million. While he remains rich and famous, his career has been on the decline because of injuries as well as his tarnished image.
Dan Wetzel of Yahoo said that Woods’ “pathetic” mugshot was a reminder of how much the sports star had fallen and that he was in need of help.
“There is no excuse for a DUI, certainly not cash being tight. It’s not an economic decision. It’s a criminal one, born of stupidity and hubris and a lack of planning. If nothing else, let that pathetic photo of Tiger Woods be a reminder to all of us to avoid such a path. It’s an easy slide. It’s an easy avenue to regret,” Wetzel wrote. “Woods’ health is no longer just about the back he can’t seem to ever get well enough to swing a club the way he once did. He’s barely played since 2015, and even then he was a shell of his former self.”
A source told TMZ that Woods’ team have been contacting the police station to determine whether or not his arresting officer was wearing a body cam.
