Celeb Chef Bobby Flay Files Bad Furniture Lawsuit

Summary: Bobby Flay is suing a New Jersey furniture maker for an allegedly unusable couch.

Bobby Flay may know how to slay in the kitchen, but he might be a poor shopper. According to Fox News, the celebrity chef hired a designer to make him a custom couch, but he sued the company because the couch was “uncomfortable.”

In 2015, Flay contacted Jamie Stern Designs to make him a $19,000 custom sectional leather sofa. The multi-millionaire said that the couch he received in February of 2016 was “intolerably uncomfortable” to sit on for long periods of time, and he said that he contacted Jamie Stern Designs to correct the issue. However, Jamie Stern Designs ignored his repeated requests.

“Despite numerous complaints by the plaintiff, defendant failed to either repair the Sofa or reimburse plaintiff for the cost of the unusable Sofa,” the complaint stated.

Fed up, Flay filed the lawsuit this month in New York City, where the couch was delivered. He said that although Jamie Stern Designs didn’t give a written warranty, there was an “implied warranty” that the seating would be used the way a normal sofa was used, i.e. it didn’t hurt someone’s butt to sit on.

Flay is seeking the cost of the couch plus pre-judgement and post-judgement interest.

Bobby Flay, 52, is a chef and a Food Network television personality. He owns multiple restaurants, including Mesa Grill in Las Vegas and the Bahamas; Bar Americain in New York and at Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, Connecticut; Bobby Flay Steak in Atlantic City; and Gato in New York. He specializes in Mexican and Southwestern cuisine, and according to Celebrity Net Worth, he is estimated to be worth $20 million.

Based on his television personality, Flay is known as a fierce competitor who is not willing to back down.

Jamie Stern Designs specializes in custom furniture and has an office in New Jersey. Founded in 1983, the company offers furniture, leather, and carpet to companies and consumers. According to its website, “Today, Jamie Stern prides itself on providing a wide range of products for the A&D community including high-end, custom designs. The company has collaborated with a plethora of designers on collections including Kay Lang, Angel Ortiz, Vicente Wolf, Philippe David, and Brian Graham.”

Flay filed the lawsuit on June 8, according to Bravo TV, and this means that Jamie Stern Designs has 20 to 30 days to respond.
