marriage proposal

Summary: After being arrested on several warrants, a man asked police if he could propose to his girlfriend before being taken off to jail.

Brandon Thompson was not having the best day when police officers arrived to arrest him and take him to jail. During the arrest, the 35-year-old made an unusual request to the officers – he wanted to propose to his girlfriend Leandria Keith. Thompson said, “I didn’t want to part ways with her not showing exactly how I feel for her. I want her to be my wife for the rest of my life.”

Even though it may not have been the most romantic proposal situation in history, police were happy to oblige his request. Thompson had several felony warrants out for his arrest so when Officer Bob Lynch spotted him earlier in the day, he followed Thompson back to his house. Officers showed up later that day to arrest Thompson during his birthday and Independence Day celebration. Perhaps ruining his birthday party is why the police were so willing to accommodate his request.

While detaining Thompson in the front yard, Thompson said, “I asked the officer I could propose. The said, â€You want to do what?’ and I said, â€I want to propose to her.’” Lynch and his partner Office Lincoln Anderson agreed to allow the proposal to happen. Anderson, who happens to be the department’s spokesman added, “It took us by surprise that he asked if he could do it.” A police body camera caught the moment on video.

The body cam video shows Thompson instruct his mother to get the ring and ask if he should “do it now.” Viewers can then hear Thompson say shortly after, “I love you. Will you be my wife, please?” The video then shows an officer switch the handcuffs to the front so Thompson can place the ring on Keith’s finger as she says “yes.”

Keith told CNN, “I was shocked.” She explained that they have been together for over a year and will not set a date for a wedding until his legal problems are taken care of. Thompson added, “When you’re in love with somebody and you know that you want to spend the rest of your life with them, you just want them to know how you feel. I wanted a new start for me and with the police taking me to jail I didn’t have to worry about my warrants anymore.”

Thompson had six felony warrants out for his arrest in Muskogee County mostly for failure to appear and failure to pay.

He is already involved in the community by coaching a peewee football team. He said, “So many young kids grow up without fathers and don’t have the correct type of guidance. I’ve been down that road before. I don’t want them to make the same mistake I’ve made.”

Anderson added, “We all want to see someone get their life on track. Hopefully it will help him make the choices it will take to support his wife and his kids. And if by letting him take a moment before going to jail to do what he did, then we did our jobs. Police officers are human. We care about the city we serve and the people in it. Sometimes the smallest gesture of kindness is the biggest influence in someone’s life.”
