Summary: A gender reveal party ended in tragedy on Saturday.
This weekend, a group of family and friends got together for a trendy gender reveal party at a home in Colerain Township, Ohio. After the reveal was over, everyone settled in to watch a movie, and that’s when joy ended in tragedy when two gunmen barged in and opened fire, according to CNN.
“We don’t know who the suspects are or why they did this,” Mark Denney, chief of police in Colerain Township, said to CNN. “We’re not sure if (the suspects) were allowed in or they forced entry at this point.”
The suspects remain at large and have not been identified, authorities said, and police said that they wore hoodies and held handguns. The men killed 22-year-old Autumn Garrett and wounded five adults and three children.
Those who were hit were taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The party-goers had gathered for a gender reveal party, which is when expectant parents and guests learn the soon-to-arrive baby’s gender. It usually includes a dramatic moment that signals the gender, such as cutting a cake and the inside is either blue or pink.
After the baby’s gender was revealed, the guests had turned on Spider-Man and were hanging out before the gunmen arrived. James Love, spokesman for the Colerain Township Police Department told HLN that the shooting seemed to be random, but that the city was evaluating the safety of the neighborhood.
“We as police and the community has been recently coming together, trying to unite ourselves, trying to create a community sense, once again trying to put up good defenses,” Love said. “Lights, cameras and everything else to try to cut down on what has become a problem in this neighborhood.”
Candice Vega, a party guest, told WLWT that the mood was “positive” and “happy” before the gunshots changed everything.
“Everybody’s screaming and crying and it’s just all panic and I’m even shaking and everything,” Verga said.
The Saturday incident resulted in the expectant mother losing her baby. She said that she was shot in the leg and that injury resulted in her miscarriage. According to People, the gunmen can be tried for the baby’s murder in the state of Ohio.
“I did talk to the officer that was the first one on the scene and he just said it was horrific,” Love said to CBS News. “He said it was something that was unimaginable, and when he started for calling for help, he said, ‘what do I say? I need ambulances, I need people to help me out here.'”
